In the year 2006, 5,703 people died while at work. Most of them died due to work related accidents. Most of these accidents could have been avoided. See the Bureau of Labor Statistics Website for more detailed information.

The U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Education and Labor is urging legislation that will improve workplace safety. But we all know how Congress works. For every legislator who argues to improve workplace safety there is another legislator who argues that it will cost big business to much money. Meanwhile people are dying unnecessarily.

I have been a personal injury lawyer for 30 years and during this time I have learned the best way to get a company to do something is to hit them in the pocketbook. I have represented many workers injured in industrial accidents over the years and sometimes when the jury teaches the company that caused the death or injury a lesson by socking them with a big monetary verdict, all of a sudden the company takes notice and begins to change the way it does business.

This is one of the reasons why I love what I do. Our civil justice system provides a means whereby an injured worker may recieve just compensation and at the same time provide incentive for the defendant company to take measures so that similar incidents won't happen again. It doesn't get much better than that.
