For thirty years I have been representing people who have been seriously injured in car accidents. This has not been the only focus of my practice. I also represent people injured in product liability cases, that is injuries caused by defectively manufactured or designed products, medical malpractice and the like. But car accidents and representing those seriously injured in them has been the bread and butter so to speak.

The work is not glamorous and can often be very difficult and at times heart wrenching. How do you tell a young mother who has just lost her husband, the father of her children and breadwinner to the wrecklessness of a drunk driver that the insurance was limited and the drunk driver doesn't have personal assets to pay a settlement or judgement? Getting the drunk drive off the road is important but it doesn't pay the bills. The work can also be challanging. Insurance companies hire big law firms to minimize the amounts they must pay to settle cases. The antidote to this is presenting the case to juries in a competent and persuasive way. This takes a lot of know how and experience and as I said before I've been doing it for thirty years. The greatness of the civil justice system is that in court only one lawyer can speak at a time. I doesn' t matter how many lawyers the insurance company has in the back of the room only one can talk for the company and one can speak for the injured.

There is no doubt that car accidents can wreak havoc on a family. There is equally no doubt the civil justice system is absolutely necessary to those families scarred by the negligence of others. Without it there could be no fair system of recompense. My firm, Van Dorn & Curtiss fights hard at many levels to preserve the civil justice system so that ordinary people harmed by negligence and other wrongdoing can have access to justice when they need it.
