The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a warning about the prevalence of fires in college dormitories, fraternities, sororities, as well as barracks. The CPSC referred to some stunning basic facts on fires in college dorms.

According to CPSC Chairman Nancy Nord, "Going to college marks an important milestone, and the CPSC doesn't want that to be marred by a potentially tragic fire." The CPSC wants to underscore the importance of proper fire safety techniques as students leave the safety of home for college campuses.

Students use a variety of small appliances while at school in confined spaces, such as hot plates, toaster ovens, microwaves, candles and lamps. Students also smoke cigarettes more frequently than the general population, which leads to a greater safety hazard for everyone.
