Last night my community had its annual fireworks display to celebrate our Nation's independence. Fortunately I don't believe there were any incidents. Everyone went home happy and filled with fried dough and memories of the spectacle. But sadly, this is not always the case. Every year around this time we learn of serious injury or even death from fireworks mishaps. This morning I read about a tragic incident at the Washington mall and it reminded me to send this message reminding you to be especially careful around fireworks.

Fireworks can be particularly hazardous because on the one hand we think of them as things to have fun with, but on the other they can be deadly dangerous. When we're having fun we don't always put safety first. So, here's the reminder. Have fun. Even with fireworks, but always with adult supervision and always respecting them for the dangerous instrumentalities that they can be. And never, never mix fireworks with alcohol.

Unfortunately our law firm has been called on in the past to help victims who have sustained serious personal injuries in fireworks mishaps. Sometimes the injury is the responsibility of others, even the manufacturer when the fireworks are defectively manufactured. But sometimes the injury is simply caused by the carelessness of the injured person. In those cases there is no legal relief.
